Movable Type's Motion

A few days ago Movable Type launched Motion - with the tagline of "Own your brand across the web" this is a great first move from Movable Type to win over marketeers that will need better tools to manage brands on the web. Motion allows users to create their own social network while still taking advantage of activity on the larger social networks - and housing all this under on roof.

Motion from Movable Type is both a "social website in a box" and a social content aggregator.

On the social website aspect Motion will allow you to provide your own little twitter / delicious and will allow visitors to your website login with their existing username and passwords from larger websites such as Facebook and participate in your own community.

On the aggregation side Motion can act as an aggregator of all your online social web activity - creating an activity stream that is the sum of all actions from across the popular websites such as YouTube, Flickr, Twitter, etc.

The two things together means that you can nurture your own local community without loosing touch with the wider community that perhaps never even visits your website.

Now, what remains to be seen is how well this actually works although the initial demos, etc are quite promising. It is a shame that you need a Movable Type Pro license to get this going (i.e. pay) and it is not clear whether you get access to the source code - but at the very least it will inspire others to provide similar tools.
