Techcrunch UK had quite an interesting story today - about Twitter handing over to Skype private information of an ex-Skype employee.
It seems that the Skype employe was responsible for the Twitter @skype account, and after leaving the company did not hand over username and password to Skype, effectively becoming a squatter of the company name.
This is a very good example of exactly why companies should take over their online identity and have a consistent system to manage it - rather than assign different aspects of it to different employes.
If Skype wants to run a Twitter account then the password information as well as all the discussions taking place on Twitter should be immediately accessible to Skype, and an employe leaving the company should not mean that Skype is now left asking Twitter for the information and placing Twitter in the rather uncomfortable situation of being accused of privacy violation.
I expect we will see a lot more of this happening as people who take on the "social media" responsibility change companies, jobs, etc and take with them all the "social knowledge".
