We are launching our new istos.it website today. Hopefully it provides a clear pictures of what projects we are involved with and what we are able to do. There may still be a few kinks to iron out so please bare with us. Also, for our Italian visitors, a translation of the website will soon be available.
Today also marks our final farewell to Wordpress as an underlying development framework for our website work. While we still believe that Wordpress has a very important role to play in web development in general, and directly comparing Wordpress to Drupal is the wrong approach to evaluating which to use, we are pretty much convinced that there is little sense for us to continue supporting two different platforms.
There are several reasons for this:
1. While Wordpress still probably makes sense for smaller / simpler websites (and is hands down the best dedicated blog platform) it is simply easier for us as a team to follow developments (including the crucial security upgrades) for just one platform.
2. Focusing on just one platform also helps us concentrate training time to just one platform and makes it easier to standardise a lot of our processes.
3. Increasingly a lot of our websites (even the very simple ones) required internationalisation. Wordpress does not handle that as cleanly as Drupal does.
4. The Drupal community provides more of a sense of openness for developing the platform when compared to Wordpress which (on first approach) seems much more guided from a single organisation.
5. Drupal appeals to the developers within us - the hook system works nicely and allows us to easily mould Drupal into what we need.
6. CCK and Views make our life so much simpler - even if a website only has 5 pages - the ability to standardise content formats through the Content Construction Kit and display it in various ways through Views is an unbelievable time save.
